A Comprehensive Framework for Professional Development

CL_AllianceRibbon (Office)Catapult Learning’ Five Strand Design of Exemplary Schools is a holistic, research-based model built upon five interrelated areas of focus that are integral to school improvement. Each strand is informed through an essential question; together, these questions illustrate how the Five Strand Design functions as a comprehensive system for school improvement.

The following five focus areas—or strands—serve as the foundation for Catapult Learning products and services and are centered on raising and successfully maintaining student achievement.

  1. LEADERSHIP
How well is the school set for leading and managing change?
  2. PEDAGOGY & CURRICULUM
How good are opportunities for learning and developing learners?
  3. ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING
How well does the school use assessment, data , and feedback to
    promote learning?
  4. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
How well does the school promote and foster environments that support learning and motivation?
  5. STUDENT & FAMILY SUPPORT
How well does the school use internal and external resources to meet the educational needs of all learners?

Catapult Learning’s products and services lead our school and district partners toward the model’s desired outcome—the “Attributes of an Exemplary School.”

Attributes of an Exemplary School

School improvement research and our work with schools have led us to identify, within each of the five strands, several attributes of an exemplary school. These are the activities and processes you see in a well-run school—the attributes that ensure success for all learners when well implemented and sustained.

At the heart of the Five Strand approach—and the Catapult Learning products and services for which it provides a foundation—is a relentless focus on student achievement and the effective use of data to inform instruction and decision-making.
