The Catapult Learning Writing Enrichment Program is an instructional program designed
to develop written composition skills in elementary and middle students. Each lesson accesses and
builds students’ background knowledge, develops relevant vocabulary, and guides students through
the stages of the writing process, including prewriting, drafting, sharing and revision, editing,
and development of a final draft. In addition, each lesson is supported with a corresponding
language expansion activity to enhance students’ oral language skills. The Catapult Learning
Writing Enrichment program actively engages students in narrative and expository writing for
a variety of purposes; to express personal ideas, to inform, and to persuade.

Each Catapult Learning Writing Enrichment Lesson has been designed to address specific writing skills and provides a scaffolded approach to student learning. The carefully scaffolded instruction provides students opportunities for direct instruction, guided practice, and independent practice across a two-or three-day sequence of skill instruction. The overarching goal of this program is for students to become more effective and efficient with their writing skills and knowledge and to apply these newly acquired skills directly to the classroom. Students demonstrate their knowledge through oral discussion and a variety of partner and individual writing activities.
- Lessons are designed to address specific types of writing (e.g. narrative, informative, persuasive), with targeted objectives focused on writing skills and the writing process.
- Each of the 10 lessons requires three instructional hours to implement, and can be delivered in a 60-minute or 90-minute format.
- The program is designed to be delivered in a small group setting with an 8:1 student-teacher ratio.
