Catapult Learning's AchieveReading Individualized Program provides individualized intervention for students who demonstrate persistent reading difficulties are identified as at-risk. While there are three or four students present at a session, each student works on an individualized prescription based on skills gaps identified through the assessment process. The overarching goal is for students to become more effective and efficient readers and to directly apply these acquired skills in the classroom.

This "mastery learning" approach allows a student to work through skills at his/her own pace to ensure understanding and application of concept knowledge. Instructors introduce new skills using a guided practice approach, and then scaffold instruction until a student demonstrates understanding. Students move on to more difficult skills after a series of successful performances on independent practice activities. The mastery learning approach is designed for students to experience immediate success, maintain motivation, and improve performance on individually identified skills. In addition to direct skill instruction, students are taught strategies to become more skillful readers including: self-monitoring techniques, self-questioning and using graphic organizers.

The scope and sequence of the AchieveReading Individualized Program includes the essential components of an effective reading program:

• Alphabetics (phonics instruction and phonemic awareness)
• Comprehension
• Vocabulary
• Fluency development

The goal of phonics instruction is to teach students to decode unknown words quickly and accurately in order to improve comprehension and develop reading fluency. Comprehension instruction includes the explicit teaching of skills such as: identifying main idea, finding details, analyzing characters, drawing conclusions, making inferences and determining author’s purpose.

Students are offered a variety of expository and narrative text selections, including decodable text and connected text for comprehension and fluency, to support the program's core objectives across the grade levels. These selections were chosen to represent cultural and economic diversity, and vary by topic, focus, genre, style, format and length, with an emphasis on content area topics and support.
