Literacy First has closed the achievement gap in more than 800 schools in over 20 states. Schools using the program typically have over 75% economically disadvantaged students and frequently, more than 35% are English language learners.

Literacy First provided the strong instructional framework that has led our district from one that was “On Watch” to one that is one TO watch. It has been a vital piece of our school improvement solution.

Get Teachers and Leadership Teams Thinking Differently about Teaching Literacy with Literacy First’s Three Year Process

IMG_6613In this phased, three-year program, Literacy First builds an understanding of the role literacy plays in academic achievement and reinforces the skills you need to address student performance challenges in reading comprehension and the content areas. Literacy First consultants develop and maintain a strong relationship with teachers and administrators within each school to build instructional knowledge and skills, facilitate program implementation, and foster lasting culture change district-wide. Literacy First delivers:

  • Comprehensive site analysis to identify areas for strengthening instruction in reading comprehension and literacy
  • Customized three-year achievement plan to create strategy and set benchmarks for student and teacher success
  • Professional development to strengthen the skills of teaching and leadership teams
  • Coaching and consulting to provide specialized support as you implement Literacy First’s instructional changes
  • Curriculum materials including lessons, center activities, readers, and more, that give teachers everything they need to teach foundational reading skills such as phonological awareness, phonics, and comprehension.
  • Leadership training seminars to establish and sustain real and meaningful change
  • Real-time data analysis that assists with disaggregating student achievement and forming flexible skill groups
  • Proven- effective RTI-model lessons

Students receive Literacy First’s intensive differentiated support at need level, not grade level.

To ensure that your Tier II (and III) students receive the differentiated support they need to achieve reading success, The Literacy First Framework includes proven-effective Response to Intervention (RtI) model lessons. This RtI support reinforces the discrete skills needed for reading comprehension at each individual skill level to pinpoint specific weakness.  Formative assessment with clear and specific feedback guides teachers on exactly what to say and do to ensure student mastery of these skills are achieved. Included in the Literacy First RtI solution are lesson extensions for English Language Learners and Special Ed subgroups.
