The Literacy First Framework

Literacy First is a research-based, comprehensive reading-reform process that accelerates reading achievement of all students in grades PreK through 12. The process is based on systematic and explicit instruction in the processes of reading and comprehension for grades Pre-K to 12.

Literacy First consultants develop and maintain a strong working partnership with each school, fostering infrastructure and lasting culture change. The three-year framework includes site visits, professional development, consulting, coaching, and curriculum materials that result in sustainable teacher and student success.

Goals of the Literacy First Framework

  • Goal 1:   Accelerate reading achievement of ALL students so they are reading on or above grade level within three years.
  • Goal 2:   Develop knowledge and skills of the district and building leadership team to enable them to implement and sustain the complex instructional change necessary to accomplish the achievement goal.
  • Goal 3:   Develop the instructional knowledge and skills of the teachers so that they can provide reading instruction in a systematic and explicit manner.
  • Goal 4:   Develop an in-depth understanding of the reading processes in all teachers so they can provide reading instruction in a systematic and explicit manner.
